U11 Reds v Prestwich
Played Prestwich on Saturday and deservedly won 5-2 that was played with some strong challenges but also in a good spirit by both reams. The best example of this was near the end where Leland was clattered by one of their defenders and even after the ref had played advantage and Will crossed for Kyle to score, their lad then went over to Leland to check that he was ok and shake hands which was good to see.
The goals came from a hat-trick from Jordan and one one each by Jake and Kyle.
We were without Liam who couldn’t make it so Kyle played the first half in goal and Rueben played the second half. Both of them did really well in goal, especially Kyle who you wouldn’t have guessed he wasn’t a regular keeper. Notably coming out of his area with confidence to clear any long balls over the top. Rueben did the same in the second half but needed to be reminded that he had to come off his line, and once he got used to it he was fine.
Stephen didn’t make it until late in the first half so Rueben started in the centre of defence which he hasn’t played often and he was excellent showing good positional play.
Played at Hopwood again on a large pitch – about half again as wide as we normally play on, and we played some good slick passing football at times.
Some notable performances from Will at left back who was rarely out of position and was very vocal in letting the midfielder in front of him know where he should be, Sam and Leland both put in a big shift in the centre of midfield covering every blade of grass. Especially pleasing to see Leland being very physical, both making and riding tackles as I know he can and he looked a different player to earlier in the season.
It also needs to be mentioned that we have finally scored our first header of the season! A great corner by Leland was flighted to the far post that was attacked by Jordan who headed down powerfully past their keeper who had no chance. All those corner/heading drills finally pay off!
Two wins on the bounce now so hopefully we can keep improving up to our final in May.
