U 11 Reds v Reddish on 9/3/19

Played Reddish on Saturday back at our “home” pitch at Oasis Academy, where the weather was awful, with a strong, gusting wind that kept changing direction and the weather changed from bright and sunny to strong rain to hailstones at will.

We played the conditions better than Reddish and eventually ran out either 3-1, or 4-1 winners after a flurry of late goals. The goals were scored by Rueben and two for Jordan and possibly AN Other!

We were without Leland who was away and he could have been a big miss as he has been playing really well in the centre of midfield, but fortunately both Josh and Tom who had a half each in the centre gave good performances.

We scored in the first half following a long dead ball from Stephen where the wind played a factor so their defence missed a clearance and Rueben broke through and finished well into the corner. Other than the goal it was an even first half as both teams struggled to play football due to the wind.

Reddish equalised early in the second half following one of our corners they cleared the ball that Stephen then misjudged due to the wind – no fault at all on Stephen’s part, and their forward ran through to finish well.

We took the lead with ten minutes to go after a well worked throw in on our left was played in to Jordan in the centre who finished well. Reddish then started to chase the game and we were able to create a number of chances where Jake saw their keeper make a good save after he closed down one of their defenders to go one-on-one with the keeper, both Sam and Jordan went close with efforts across the keeper that went just wide before Jordan converted a chance to make the game safe.

A lot of the players gave their usual strong performances but I was especially please with Tom who has struggled in the last few games, but he did everything I asked of him in the middle of midfield, making tackles and playing first time passes to either the wings or forward to Jordan as I’d stressed to the team that in a game where the wind is so strong players will make mistakes and the team who can play in the other teams half will win. In the second half Reddish also had a number of corners as the wing changed direction so we faced into it and Tom must have made four headed clearances where he attacked and won the ball well. This was really important where we have struggled defending corners this season where no-one has been attacking the ball.

Also Liam deserves a mention as he was that cold he played with his coat on during the second half but he still kept his concentration to make sure he got all of his body behind any shots from distance etc to make sure we didn’t concede any sloppy goals due to the wind.

Three wins on the bounce now as we build to our final in May.
