U13 Reds v Springhead
Chadderton FC Juniors under 13s Reds
Match report vs. Springhead (13th October 2019)
Hoping to get on a good cup run, we took on Springhead on a damp morning in Ashton. Springhead are a team we have had mixed performances against recently and, being a good balance of strength and skill, we needed to be at our best.
Starting with George in goal, Ioan right back and Kian left back with Caiden and Harvey between them, Jack right midfield, Cameron left midfield, Tyler, Daniel and Dan between them and Kye up front.
Our shape was good at the start of the game with definite lines and midfielders breaking. Their number 9 is a livewire on the left but Ioan and Jack kept him in check. We had played some good football without carving out chances and it was disappointing when Springhead drew first blood.
As they tried to add to their advantage we held firm with the central defenders strong and Dan dropping back to help out when needed.
We started to get a foothold in the game and took control – Tyler battled well in midfield and we managed to work the ball into the area where Kye finished at the second attempt. Normally known for his touch and dribbling skills, it was pure determination which rewarded him in this case, chasing the ball down after his shot had been blocked and burying it in the bottom corner.
We changed personnel a little to give legs a rest from a physical battle but it didn’t affect our momentum. Springhead had to work hard to create chances and George came out bravely twice to smother at attackers’ feet. When they did get the ball past him they hit the post before putting another chance wide. Their chances were clearer than those we had created but a combination of strength at the back and quality up front meant that when we next scored, it put us in front. Cameron picked the ball up half way into Springhead’s half, dribbled past two opponents before bending it beautifully into the far corner.
Three minutes later the scores were level as Springhead chased a loose ball down in our area. It made the half time team talk a little different to that which we had hoped but level at half time was probably a fair half time position.
In the second half the game was end to end without there being a lot of chances but that was down to two very good defences. Charlie was a strong runner for us on the right and powered into the area more than once without finding the finishing touch – credit to their keeper and leftback for this as Charlie gave them a torrid time.
As the half wore on our shape in midfield meant we left gaps and our defenders absorbed a great deal of pressure as a result. All performed amazing – Kian, Jack, Joe (some crunching tackles and use of the ball) and Harvey but special mentions go to Ioan and Caiden for their tenacity and positioning. Their main threat was kept at bay as they attacked more and more through the middle.
As it looked like we were heading for penalties, runners up front (Charlie, Adam and Kye in particular) tried to put pressure on. It was gauling when they won a corner from a chance which looked offside and when we cleared we didn’t follow up to close down a shot and it found the roof of the net. That was almost the last kick of the game and we didn’t have time to respond.
So disappointing – the effort was top quality, positioning went astray as the game went on but it was a great match. It was Caiden’s final performance for the team as he decided that a team closer to home was better for him. It was a great performance to sign off on and we wish him well. Back to the league next week.
