Played Stockport Barbarians and drew 2-2.

Played Stockport who have re-named – they used to be Vipers which were a team who always beat us in previous seasons so I’ve always looked on them as our benchmark of where we want to be.

They are a good strong side who we would have played in the cup final if we had beaten Chaddy Park the previous week which shows they are a good team.

We had beaten them 2-1 in the autumn season but we were without Will, Leland and Stephen due to illness and we were unable to get any cover in (Leland and Stephen dropped out in the morning before the game).

This meant that we had no subs so the players would need to pace themselves. It was a good open game between two strong teams where it was played hard but with good sportsmanship. For example, Sam was flattened by one of their centre backs who both towered over him, but their coach made sure the lad came over and shook Sam’s hand.

We opened the scoring when the referee played advantage after Sam was knocked over by a late challenge as he played Rueben in, and Rueben made no mistake and finished confidently through the keepers legs. We then had two goals disallowed, one from Sam where the ref thought he handled the ball holding off their keeper before he scored (it looked like shoulder to me), and one for a high boot from Michael before he played Rueben in who again finished well across the keeper. Again it was a marginal call as their lad ducked down to try and head the ball.

Stockport equalized after we had chances to clear the ball, before we went ahead through Sam who put in a shot to the top corner from out on the right wing that their keeper could only parry into the net.

They equalized near the end as we were visibly tiring and again scored from close range where we had chances to clear the ball.

In summary I was gutted for the lads that we hadn’t won simply as reward for all the effort that they had put in. Everyone of them was shattered at the final whistle and I was proud of all of them.

This season we have beaten and drawn with a team that was always had the hoodoo over us in past years so again it shows that we are improving all the time, after being promoted in each of our first three full seasons.
